La Lomita Chapel

1
The original chapel at Rancho La Lomita was built of adobe in 1865 by the fathers and ranch workers. After the death of Mr. Guyard in 1871, the ranch was willed to the Oblates. The first chapel was torn down in 1885, and four years later, in 1889, the present Capilla de la Lomita was constructed on the same site. Its walls were built of sandstone taken from the nearby hill and never needed structural repair after its abandonment. A new roof was put on the building in 1928, and although the chapel was badly damaged, it was kept from ruin through the 1930s to the 1960s.
