The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, founded in 1907 along Monterey Bay beside Main Beach, is California’s oldest surviving amusement park and one of the West Coast’s few still-operating seaside parks. Its rise grew from early rail and trolley excursion travel and from development beginning with Fred W. Swanton’s 1903 beach corporation and the 1904 opening of the Neptune Casino. The boardwalk is especially known for the historic Giant Dipper and Looff Carousel, both nationally recognized landmarks. Other longtime attractions, including the Cocoanut Grove, reflect its evolution as a resort and entertainment center. It remains a defining Santa Cruz landmark and a rare survivor of California’s early seaside resort era.
