Neversink Preserve in Deerpark, New York, protects a stretch of the Neversink River and was established in 1993 by The Nature Conservancy after the discovery of the federally endangered dwarf wedge mussel. Beginning with 170 acres and later expanded to 550, it safeguards forests, meadows, wetlands, and creeks that support diverse wildlife, including otters, beavers, brook trout, wood ducks, osprey, bald eagles, spotted salamanders, and snapping turtles. Its significance extends beyond the site because the Neversink is part of the Delaware River Basin, a water source for nearly 15 million people. The area also holds angling history as Theodore Gordon refined dry-fly techniques here in the 19th century.
