Alan Seeger Natural Area is a protected tract in Rothrock State Forest in central Pennsylvania, known for rare old-growth forest and extensive giant rhododendron. Established in 1921, it was named for American poet Alan Seeger, who died in 1916 while serving with the French Foreign Legion during the First World War; the tribute was made by Colonel Henry Shoemaker. Trails, including part of the Standing Stone Trail, pass through dense rhododendron and large hemlock and white pine trees, some thought to be more than 500 years old. Their survival through the late 1800s logging era may have resulted from an uncertain property line or an untimely business failure.
