Near this spot, most of the Huron captives were brought after the Senecas destroyed and burned their homes in Huronia in 1649. It was also the place of the chapel of St. Ignace, St. Marie, and St. Joseph, together with the murder of the Jesuit missionaries Saints De Broup, Lalemont, Chabanel, Daniels, and Charles Garnier, S.J. Through the kindness of John Redman, then owner of the property, and George Selden, permission was granted and this site was excavated for Herman G. Hetzler by Harry Schoff, archeologist. A small tablet had been marked before excavation by the Revs. Father Dougherty and Andrew Byrne, brother of Dr. Edward J. Byrne, in perpetuation of the heroic deeds of these early Catholic apostles of Christ.
