In 1993, Mt. Vernon resident Bill Steffy constructed a replica of the Thomas Atkins Blacksmith Shop. The former Thomas Atkins Blacksmith Shop had been located in Waltonville, Illinois. Many of the contents of the blacksmith shop are original to the Thomas Atkins Shop. The shop has 4 working forges and serves as a regular meeting place for the Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association.
