Theodore Roosevelt State Natural Area is a 265-acre preserve on Bogue Banks in Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina, protecting the barrier island’s only intact maritime forest. Established in 1971 through a donation by Theodore Roosevelt’s grandchildren from the former estate of Alice Green Hoffman, it was dedicated to conservation, wildlife education, and research. The preserve includes varied coastal habitats, from ocean-side growth and taller woods along Bogue Sound to marshes and brackish areas, supporting birds and other wildlife. A marine resource center opened there in 1976 and later became the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. Public access is limited to two short nature trails.
