The Clark R. Bavin National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Laboratory in Ashland, Oregon, is a specialized United States Fish and Wildlife Service facility dedicated to enforcing wildlife protection laws through forensic science. Established in 1988 after years of advocacy for a dedicated wildlife crime lab, it serves as the only laboratory of its kind in the world and as the official crime lab for CITES and Interpol’s Wildlife Group. Its scientists identify species from animal parts, determine causes of death, and compare evidence linking suspects, victims, and crime scenes. Expanded in 2006, the laboratory also maintains the online Feather Atlas and continues to support wildlife law enforcement with highly specialized tools and expertise.
