Longmire has been the gateway to Mount Rainier since James Longmire opened a mineral springs resort here in the 1880s. This historic village was designed to blend harmoniously into its natural setting and is part of the Mount Rainier National Historic District. Longmire includes the National Park Inn, general store, museum, former gas station, and the Wilderness Information Center, which is open summer only. The area also provides information, climbing permits, wilderness camping permits, exhibits, food, and lodging. Trails at Longmire include the Trail of the Shadows, which passes through forest and meadows, and the Rampart Ridge Trail, which leads through forests to views of Mount Rainier and the Nisqually River Valley. Human history can also be explored on the Longmire Historic Walking Tour and along the Trail of the Shadows. Debris flows and glacial outburst floods can occur here at any time, eroding stream banks and scouring everything in their path, including rocks and trees. If an earthquake occurs or a prolonged rumbling is heard, the safest response is to move quickly uphill, away from rivers and streams.
