Wing Haven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary in Charlotte, North Carolina, began in 1927 as Elizabeth and Edwin Clarkson’s carefully designed garden and wildlife refuge and later grew into a larger site that also includes the Elizabeth Lawrence House and Garden and the SEED Wildlife and Children’s Gardens. Known for uniting historic garden design, bird habitat, conservation, and environmental education, it is Charlotte’s only garden and bird sanctuary designated as a local historic landmark. More than 150 bird species have been recorded there. Its distinctive Cross of Lorraine plan, ornamental features, notable trees, and the preservation of Elizabeth Lawrence’s garden have made it an important cultural and natural landscape.
