Moore House, built around 1725 on Temple Farm near Yorktown, gained lasting importance in October 1781, when representatives of George Washington and British General Charles Cornwallis met there to negotiate the surrender terms for the Siege of Yorktown. Chosen after Cornwallis requested a cease-fire, the house stood in a convenient, relatively neutral place between opposing lines. Negotiators drafted the Articles of Capitulation there on October 18, and the final terms were agreed to and signed the next day, effectively ending major fighting in the American Revolutionary War. Damaged during the Civil War, the house was later restored and is now preserved within Colonial National Historical Park.
