USS Yorktown (CV-10), the “Fighting Lady” of World War II, was commissioned in 1943 at 27,100 tons and decommissioned in 1970 at 41,000 tons. She was named for the carrier Yorktown (CV-5), which was lost at the Battle of Midway, served as flagship of Task Force 58, helped sink the Yamato, and recovered the Apollo 8 lunar spacecraft. During World War II, two twin mounts of 5-inch guns were located on each side of the “island” superstructure, while single-mounted 5-inch guns could be seen near the bow and the crane. With the coming of missiles, most of the guns were removed, and the open bow was enclosed as a “hurricane” bow to protect the forecastle during heavy seas. Yorktown still retains her 1960's silhouette.
