State Line Congregation of the Augustana Synod was organized on April 11, 1871. A number of families had been active in the State Line Trustee District of the Estherville Lutheran Church. In 1887, these two groups organized the Union State Line Lutheran Church and met in the church built in 1882 on this very spot. Work began on a new church at Petersburg, Minn. in 1920, the cornerstone was laid on Sept. 11, 1921, and the first worship service was held Dec. 26, 1921.
