Hooker Mountain, a 2,310-foot summit in Central New York northwest of Schenevus, held a modest but distinct place in New York’s forest fire protection system. In 1935, the Civilian Conservation Corps built a 79-foot-6-inch fire tower on its summit using an International Derrick tower supplied by the United States Forest Service. The tower entered service in 1936 and reported three fires. Staffed until the end of 1970, it became obsolete as aerial fire detection replaced many lookout stations. Sold in 1975 and later removed, the structure eventually passed to the Town of Speculator, which has not yet rebuilt it.
