Slipdown Mountain, near the former community of Advance in Parker County, is the county’s highest point and the highest ground in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. More a rugged hill country summit than a large mountain, it became closely linked to the area’s earliest non-Native settlement in the early 1850s, when families settled around its slopes in still-contested Comanche country. Local tradition connects its name to nighttime raids watched from the open summit, and its frontier history includes the 1866 Sullivan-Blackwell attack. Later, the surrounding land passed through railroad reserve and school fund ownership before A.J. Stratton bought it in 1889. It also became a cherished gathering place for community recreation.
