In 1910, Missoula senator Edward Donlan, Dr. Everett Peek, and Arthur Preston organized the Thompson Falls Light and Power Company to develop electricity for the community and advance a hydroelectric power station, bringing hopes of progress to the frontier town along the riverbank. Anticipating the project, Dr. Peek built a hospital near the proposed plant site, and in 1911 the county erected two steel bridges across the Clark Fork River, replacing the old cable-drawn ferry. The Thompson Falls Power Company then built a small plant to serve both the community and the construction effort as the town bustled and building boomed. By 1916, the main and dry channel dams, power house, superintendent’s house, and about thirty project structures lined the riverbank, and by 1917 the plant supplied 30,000 kilowatts of electricity to the region, extending into Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. After World War I, however, no more major projects strengthened the local economy, and leaders such as Donlan and Peek left town in search of opportunity elsewhere. The power company removed all but a few project buildings, and Thompson Falls had to survive on its own. The remaining structures reflect the community’s early development, including St. Luke's Hospital, which Dr. Peek built as the region’s first substantial medical facility with twenty rooms that housed his hospital and briefly served as a residence. After the hydroelectric project was completed, Peek moved to Missoula and the Montana Power Company eventually acquired the building. After 1927, a three-story rear wing and a second-story wraparound porch were removed, leaving seven original rooms, and the front façade still appears much as it did in 1910, with Tuscan columns, turned wooden posts, and stained and diamond-patterned leaded glass windows.
