Built in 1940 in Bernardsville, New Jersey, the James B. Christie House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his first New Jersey client. Set on a secluded wooded site, it is Wright’s oldest house in the state and, at about 2,000 square feet, his largest there. The one-story Usonian design uses an L-shaped plan to separate shared living areas from private bedrooms, with the kitchen joining the two wings. Its flat roof, broad overhangs, and materials such as brick, cypress, and redwood emphasize Wright’s low, horizontal domestic style and his close integration of architecture with the natural landscape.
