The 58th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry erected a monument in honor of its dead, including comrades killed in battle and those who died from disease or other causes during the regiment’s Civil War service. Funds for the monument came entirely from voluntary donations and subscriptions by members of the regiment while they were in service, with no money solicited or received from outside the regiment. The contract was made in 1863, and the monument was completed, erected, and dedicated on July 4, 1865, while the regiment was still serving. It was the first regimental monument erected in Indiana in memory of Civil War soldiers and, according to the account, the only monument in Indiana or in the United States erected and dedicated by a regiment in honor of its dead while that regiment was still in service. In 1914, the survivors of the 58th Indiana Regiment added a tablet as a memorial to their deceased comrades and to preserve and perpetuate the history of the monument.
