In downtown Florence, Arizona, McFarland State Historic Park preserves a cluster of Arizona Territory-era civic buildings centered on the old courthouse, including an original structure from 1878, a jail added in 1882, and the courthouse built in 1891. Together they reflect Florence’s importance as a territorial seat of government, and the courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is named for Ernest McFarland, who served as a United States senator, governor of Arizona, and chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court. In 1974 he bought and donated the courthouse and funded its renovation, helping preserve this visible reminder of Florence’s territorial past.
