Ford Butte is a volcanic mountain on Navajo Nation land in northwestern New Mexico and a prominent local landmark near Shiprock, paired visually with Bennett Peak across U.S. Route 491. Rising about 450 feet above the surrounding high-desert plain, it is one of the major diatremes of the Four Corners region and part of the northeastern Navajo Volcanic Field, where unusual igneous rocks formed around 30 million years ago during the Oligocene. The butte also has a history of technical climbing, with recorded first ascents of its north and south summits in 1971 and 1990, and climbing requires permission from Navajo authorities.
