This two-story brick building was one of three similar residential structures erected on West Main Street shortly after Somerset's catastrophic fire of 1876. Although altered in some ways for commercial use, this late nineteenth-century residence still reflects the architectural tastes of its era through its bracketed cornice, tall second-floor windows, and gabled roof. Valentine Hay, an attorney, former editor of the Somerset Democrat newspaper, and prominent citizen, lived here until 1901. For many years the structure housed numerous local businesses, including Louther's Drug Store. Since 1978 it has been used for law offices, including those of Attorney Jerry Spangler, District Attorney of Somerset County from 1996-2012, and the Honorable Kim R. Gibson, who was appointed as a federal judge by President George W. Bush on September 23, 2003. Carroll Law Office has occupied the building since 2007.
