Cottondale was the area's oldest settlement. It was platted by landowner B. F. Banks, who also gave lots for public use. In 1875 it was named for the lush growth of cotton planted by blacksmith John Bridges to finance a trip to Alabama to bring back his bride. Paradise took over the town's post office in 1912 and its school in 1933.
