Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve is a 13.6-acre protected area in Gardena, California, preserving the last intact remnant of the former Dominguez Slough within a heavily urbanized landscape. Once part of a much larger marsh and riparian forest in the South Bay, it now protects wetland and upland habitat on the traditional lands of the Tongva. After drainage, filling, and channel construction destroyed most of the larger slough during the 20th century, local advocacy in the 1970s helped secure protection for the surviving willows. Today it supports diverse native plant communities and wildlife while facing ongoing pressures from urban runoff, invasive species, trash, and nearby development.
