The Civilian Conservation Corps Biological Survey Camp 3 was the home of Company 2705 from 1939 to 1941, when as many as 23 buildings stood here to house and support 200 men. The company's mission was the initial development of this land as a federal migratory waterfowl refuge. One of its first projects was removing rail and ties from the old railroad grade that is now the main refuge road. Conservation work here included constructing dikes and water control structures, and many of the company's accomplishments remain part of the refuge management program today. Young men were stationed at the camp for six months at a time and earned $30 per month, with $25 sent home to support their families, while also receiving room, board, and health care.
