In 1779, four thousand prisoners, British and their German auxiliaries captured at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, marched over six hundred miles to quarters called "The Barracks," situated a half mile north of this site. Tradition holds that some of the prisoners who died were buried near this site during the time the British and "Hessian" prisoners were held there in the American War of Independence.
