Tuskegee University Legacy Museum, on the university’s campus in Tuskegee, Alabama, explores university and medical history through ethics, science, and African American experience. Emerging from the aftermath of President Bill Clinton’s 1997 apology for the United States Public Health Service’s syphilis study in Macon County, it followed the creation of the university’s Bioethics Center in 2006 and opened in 2009. Its exhibitions examine the legacy of that study, the mass production and distribution of HeLa cells at Tuskegee University, and the scientific and medical work of George Washington Carver. The museum serves as a place of reflection on both achievement and injustice.
