KSMoCA is a contemporary art museum housed within Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Portland, Oregon, where contemporary art is woven into daily school life. Founded in 2014 by artists and Portland State University professors Lisa Jarrett and Harrell Fletcher, it was created so students could experience how a museum works by participating in it directly. Students collaborate with artists through exhibitions, workshops, lectures, mentorships, and curation, while the school’s hallways hold the permanent collection and a gallery hosts rotating shows. In the King neighborhood, its emphasis on artists of color connects art, education, and community in a shared institution.
