On the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the First and Second Brigades of the First Cavalry Division marched from Taneytown to Westminster, the Reserve Brigade of the First Cavalry Division marched from Emmitsburg to the field of Gettysburg, and the Second Brigade of the Second Cavalry Division marched from Manchester to Westminster, while fighting also took place at Fairfield, Pennsylvania.
