Newspaper Rock Petroglyphs Archeological District, in Petrified Forest National Park near Adamana in northeastern Arizona, is a historic site in Apache County known for its dense concentration of more than 650 petroglyphs carved into stone. Believed to date from about 1000 to 1500 CE, the rock art preserves a visible record of human activity in the area centuries before the modern park was established. The district’s importance rests in both the number of carvings it contains and its place within the park as a surviving expression of the region’s earlier inhabitants.
