The paved trail was the original automobile entrance to Cedar Point Amusement Park. Built in the early 1900's, it was one of the first hard-surface roads east of the Mississippi River. Lake Erie later washed away the section that ran along the barrier beach, and a new road was constructed to the west. The historic road now serves as a hiking trail for more than 80,000 visitors each year at Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve.
