In the 1800's, changes swept across the nation from technology to religion. As industry expanded, the Willcox family bought Sarum Forge for its Glen Mills operations, and some of the paper they made became U.S. currency. Rail service transformed transportation, and its arrival in Thornbury in 1858 made it much easier to move goods to and from Philadelphia. People in Thornbury shared in a renewed interest in religion and established several new churches. Social issues were also reconsidered as Philadelphians opened the House of Refuge, the country's first facility for court-referred young men, which moved to Thornbury in 1892 and is today the Glen Mills School. Soon afterward, a similar school for girls, Sleighton Farms, opened.
