Mackinaw River State Fish and Wildlife Area is a 1,448-acre protected tract in Tazewell County, Illinois, near Mackinaw. Established in 1970 through a land donation by the Parklands Foundation to the state, it is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Mackinaw River divides the area, which includes mostly wooded uplands, some meadows, and bottomland sections with direct river access. Managed chiefly for whitetail deer hunting, it also supports fishing and canoeing. Its broader significance lies in protecting a more natural stretch of drainage along a largely free-running river within a watershed heavily affected by crop farming, erosion, and siltation.
