Holliday Lake State Park lies within Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest and centers on a 150-acre man-made lake created by a Depression-era dam built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration. The land had been cleared for farmland in the 1880s before returning to forest in the mid-20th century. Developed as one of four recreational areas by the Virginia Division of Forestry, it opened in the 1940s for beach use and picnicking. Its historic core includes the dam, spillway, bridge, circulation system, and surviving features such as a rustic picnic shelter and wellhouse from about 1939. It joined the Virginia state park system in 1972 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
