Deer Lick Nature Sanctuary is a protected forest and gorge in Zoar Valley near Gowanda in western New York, preserving a rugged stretch of the South Fork of Cattaraugus Creek with steep ravines and wooded slopes. Established in 1960 through a land donation from Miss Evelyn Alverson and a further gift of Deer Lick Falls from Herbert F. Darling, it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1967 for its mature hardwood forest and gorges exposing the Onondaga Escarpment. By 2005 it encompassed 450 acres, including 80 acres of old-growth forest, and expanded in 2006, while offering 11 miles of public trails through relatively undisturbed woodland.
