The original Kanawha Valley Drag Strip opened near here in 1958 as West Virginia’s first organized drag strip, helping legitimize the sport in the area. Benefiting from its proximity to neighboring Ohio and that state’s established fanbase, it drew crowds to weekly events where up to two hundred drivers competed until the strip closed in 1976.
