In Indianapolis, the Indiana Medical History Museum preserves the Old Pathology Building of the former Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane, later Central State Hospital. Built in 1895 and designed by Adolf Scherrer after George F. Edenharter called for a dedicated facility, it became the Pathological Department of Central State Hospital and was regarded as advanced for its time. As the oldest surviving pathology laboratory in the United States, it is a rare survivor of early psychiatric research and teaching. The building remained in medical use into the 1950s, survived demolition of much of the hospital complex, and became a museum in 1969 with collections that later expanded beyond pathology.
