The majority of the money for the building of the public library at 401 Watson Street was given to the city by Andrew Carnegie. There was much dispute over where to place the public library, but the city board soon decided to build it at 401 Watson Street. The building later housed Pearl's House of Fashion from 1973 to 1996 and Accurate Controls from 1996 to the present.
