Some of the heaviest fighting during the Battle of Athens on Aug. 5, 1861, occurred around Jane Gray's house and the nearby cornfield, and according to eyewitnesses, several bullets struck the home during the fighting. Jane Gray's house stood on this foundation, and she lived here from the time she married James W. Gray before the Civil War until her death in 1921.
