Palmyra was the first important repair stop on the Santa Fe Trail, with a blacksmith, general store, hotel, well, saw mill, post office, and lawyer. It was settled in 1856 and surveyed in 1857. The Palmyra Association donated the land for Baker University and the city of Baldwin.
