The lands of the Mission Ranch still largely resemble the country known in the days of Lewis and Clark, in part because ranching has remained rooted in the land's natural productivity. Its grassland prairies and wooded streamside areas continue to support native fish, wildlife, grasses, and other plants. Where buffalo once grazed in seasonal migrations, cattle are now managed to produce similar effects, and cattle have grazed these lands steadily since the mid-1800s. Before that, the area bustled as a cultural crossroads, and on a midsummer evening in 1806 Captain William A. Clark and other members of the Corps of Discovery camped across the Yellowstone River from here. Since then, more events of great importance have taken place here, and today the Mission Ranch preserves its historic sites, shares them with the public, and works to maintain the landscape's body and soul through a program called Undaunted Stewardship.
