Wintergreen Gorge is a six-mile canyon in Harborcreek Township near Erie, Pennsylvania, carved by Fourmile Creek and reaching about 250 feet deep at its highest point. Formed about 11,000 years ago after retreating glaciers left debris for the creek to erode, it also exposes much older shale from the late Devonian period. Part of the gorge lies on the Penn State Behrend campus, and the Bayfront Connector crosses it on the Wintergreen Gorge Bridge. Named for the wintergreen plant once common there, the gorge is known for its forests, diverse plant and animal life, and trails designed to support recreation, study, conservation, and sustainable access.
