The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies is a series of books edited by former Union and Confederate officers and published by the U.S. Government Printing Office between 1888 and 1901 in 128 thick volumes. Although it does not include all official wartime reports to superior officers, it contains enough records to provide an overview of most of the Civil War’s more than 10,000 battles and actions. Among the reports, Maj. Gen. Blunt praised the First Kansas for fighting like veterans, keeping their line unbroken throughout the engagement, showing unmatched coolness and bravery in the hottest of the fight, and completely routing Texas troops twice their number. Brig. Gen. Cooper reported that at Elk Creek the defense might have succeeded but for worthless ammunition; Choctaw soldiers who had skirmished on the morning of the 17th returned wet and disheartened because their guns were almost useless, and despite inferior numbers, arms, munitions, and artillery, the men of Colonel Bass' regiment stood calmly and fearlessly at their posts in support of Lee's battery until the struggle became hand-to-hand, even clubbing with their muskets and yielding only after the battery had been withdrawn, then obeying orders steadily during the retreat.
