Staunton River Battlefield State Park in Halifax and Charlotte counties spans both sides of the Staunton River and preserves a historic river-crossing landscape. It combines battlefield remains, archaeological sites, and historic buildings, with interpretation centered in two visitor centers. The Roanoke visitor center in Randolph, housed in a former railroad depot, explores Native Americans and local railroad history, while the Clover visitor center focuses on the Civil War battle fought here and the region’s electric energy production. The park also includes Mulberry Hill plantation, the Wade Archeological Site, and Confederate fortifications at the bridge, bringing together military, transportation, archaeology, and river history in one preserved setting.
