Believed to be the first schoolhouse in Dorchester County, this building was erected in 1785 before the establishment of a public school system and originally stood on the north end of Taylors Island on the road to James Island. It was built with hand-hewn timbers, hand-made nails, and wooden pegs, and it could seat twelve pupils on benches around a stove in the middle of the room, with a stove pipe hole in each wall so the pipe could be shifted to suit the prevailing wind. In 1855, Travers Spicer of “Mulberry Grove” purchased the building for $90 and used it as a smokehouse. In 1959, the heir of James K. Spicer donated it to the Grace Foundation of Taylors Island, and it was moved to its current location. In 1984, the Grace Foundation restored it to its present condition.
