Bone Hill National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern North Dakota is a 640-acre limited-interest refuge within the National Wildlife Refuge System, managed under the Kulm Wetland Management District through a federal easement on privately owned land. Established on May 10, 1939, by Executive Order 8112 signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, it was part of broader Depression-era conservation efforts to address declining waterfowl populations. Management emphasizes water and wildlife habitat rather than recreation, with a dam maintained on the property and restrictions on hunting, trapping, and harassment. Despite cultivation on much of the land, its reservoir and pasture areas continue to support migrating, nesting, and brood-rearing waterfowl.
