The Gulf Ordnance Plant was a military munitions plant where shells were packed for use during World War II. It operated from 1942 until the war ended in 1945. Managed by Procter and Gamble, the plant covered 6,720 acres, employed more than ten thousand local citizens, and produced 20-, 40-, 57-, 67-, and 75-millimeter shells, rocket launchers, 100-pound bombs, and naval tracer ammunition.
