Page Pond Hill, a mountain in New York’s Southern Tier north-northwest of Sanford in Broome County, is significant for its preserved fire lookout tower, part of the state’s former forest protection system. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the steel International Derrick tower in 1935, and it entered service in 1936. In its first year, the station reported 12 fires and 29 visitors, reflecting both fire surveillance and a modest public role. Operations continued through the 1988 season before the state closed the tower in early 1989. After the site was transferred in 1992, restoration of the tower and cabin was completed in 2007. The property is now private and closed to the public.
