After buying an entire piece of property mainly to obtain the level ground below for a summer home or mountain cabin, the new owners noticed a slight compass variation while helping a surveyor along the north line. The surveyor suggested it might be caused by a nearby barbed wire fence or minerals in the ground, but later reflection led them to doubt either explanation. Using a small hand compass, they checked the area themselves, and after crossing over the north line and returning down a small canyon or draw above here, they felt light headed or top heavy, as if something were trying to force them off the hill. When they looked again at the compass, it showed a clear variation, and further checking led them to identify a spot of ground about one hundred fifty feet in diameter where they had not found any instrument to be absolutely correct. A portable radio functioned there with very little variation and came closest to being correct.
