On September 11, 2001, nineteen Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, deliberately crashing two into the upper floors of the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and a third into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The Twin Towers later collapsed from the impact damage and resulting fires. After learning of the other attacks, passengers aboard Flight 93 fought back, and that plane crashed into an empty field in western Pennsylvania about 20 minutes by air from Washington, D.C. The attacks killed 2,977 people from 93 nations, including 2,753 in New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 on Flight 93. Among the victims was Parkersburg, West Virginia, native Mary Lou Hague-Adams, a financial analyst working on the 89th floor of the South Tower that morning.
