Henry Ford's Fort Myers estate was lushly landscaped. Original owner Robert Smith noted that there were hundreds of fruit trees, including grapefruit, orange, tangerine, guava, and many mango trees, which gave the estate its name. Mango trees and oleander surrounded the entrance to The Mangoes around 1916. Several photos believed to have been sent by the original owner in an effort to entice Ford to buy the property highlighted its natural beauty and tropical foliage. A vintage postcard image showed large fruit trees growing near the entryway. Ford took great pride in the plants and trees that flourished on his property, especially the variety of citrus that grew there.
